Wireless Site Survey Rigs (a repost)

I’ve been traveling to customer locations to perform wireless site survey work for over four years now, and I can assure you traveling with survey gear can be somewhat tricky, especially if you’re like me and want to avoid checking your bags at the airport. I’ve seen many a survey kit arrive in pieces as a result of the thorough TSA checked baggage ‘screening’. As a result, I’ve come up with some fool proof ways of flying with survey gear stored in my carry-on luggage, while doings so in a way that I’m not holding up the TSA security checkpoint line. 
The gear I carry with me to do an active site survey is a Tessco battery pack, a Cisco 1140 access point (or a Cisco 3500 CleanAir access point), a roll of duct tape, colored ½ inch stickers, a Sharpie, a roll of transparent tape, and the mounting bracket for the 1140/3500 access point. The mounting bracket uses the metal mounting bracket that ships with the 1140/3500 series access point and a wooden block threaded for a painters’ extension pole. The wooden block was at one time a drywall texture brush.

I removed the bristles with a pair of pliers and then spray-painted the wood block gloss black to look more professional.


A pair of Mr. Longarm Angle Adapters allow me to suspend the 1140 access point from the wooden block bracket as if it were installed on theceiling.


I have seen someone use a plastic backed drywall texture brush as their mount for an 1140 bracket, but I don’t have a dremel to grind down the plastic mount to allow for the bumps on the back of the 1140 flat metal bracket.

Those are the basic parts I need to perform an active site survey at the customer location.
Before I discovered Ziploc XL bags at Home Depot I had to pull out the access point and power supply and put them in a bin, and now I use one of these gigantic bags to carry all the survey gear. I can zip open my carry on suitcase and lift all the survey gear out and put it in an x-ray bin in one swift movement.


Since a survey cart is too large to count as carry on luggage, and often don’t have enough early warning about a site survey to ship anything to the site, I’ve had to make do with things that wouldn’t normally pass as a survey cart.  The customer sometimes will have an A/V cart or a utility cart that I can use to survey with, but sometimes I have to be a bit more creative.  I’ve made do with items you wouldn’t normally imagine passing as a cart for surveying. I use the following as examples: the survey kit pelican case, an office chair (works if it is a really small survey); a furniture moving cart, a furniture dolly, and sometimes I even had a proper Rubbermaid cart to use.





The things I can’t travel with are the Mr. Longarm 12 foot painter’s pole and a dowel rod. These items can be found at any Home Depot, and there has been a Home Depot within driving distance of every site I’ve had to survey. I use the dowel rod to attach the ¼ inch round labels combined with the transparent tape to the suspended ceiling grid to mark the access point installation locations.  I fold the transparent tape into an “L” shape and then stick the tape to the suspended ceiling grid.  This works much better for me than having to find and drag a ladder around with me so I can reach the ceiling to manually mark the access point installation locations.

Several other wireless engineers I’ve worked with have designed their own outdoor survey rigs by using perforated sheet metal strips and crafting survey tripods out of this held together with bolts and wingnuts.  I have also seen survey rigs for outdoor point to point feasibility testing crafted out of sections of PVC pipe.  PVC piping is very sturdy, disassembles easy, and can be used in a multitude of ways to create a survey pole or survey mounting structure.  My friend Jeff Russell has made an outdoor rig for doing a mesh survey from PVC piping, and an indoor tripod mount out of perforated metal (photo gallery at this link).



There are certainly a million different ways to craft a survey rig out of commonly available parts from your nearest hardware store.  The only limit seems to be your imagination.

Access Point Mounting Solutions for Warehouses and High Open Ceilings

Recently I was asked about ways a customer could mount their access points lower than the 25 foot ceiling present in their building. The physical structure is occupied by AC ducts, electrical conduit and fluorescent lighting at the full height of the ceiling, making installation of access points at that height undesirable for many obvious reasons.

One option is to mount the access points to columns by using an Oberon 90 degree wall mounting bracket. This bracket retails for $80, which can quickly add to the overall cost of your project depending on how many access points need this installation option.

I asked the twitter-verse for input and received several good links to sites where DIY solutions are featured.
One recommendation uses what appears to be a metal book stop repurposed as an angle bracket, another uses common parts found at a hardware store to create a quick, inexpensive mounting solution (by Timothy Dennehy).

Other commercially available solutions involve suspension cables to literally hang the access point from the ceiling, or suspend it off of a threaded metal rod. A similar mounting structure can also be created from off the shelf parts by using threaded metal rods and toggle bolts to tighten the access point to an overhead I-beam in a warehouse environment. 

For every commercially available solution, there is a way to do it cheaper if you've got the time brainstorm a solution from the parts and pieces available from your local home improvement center. Not all mounting solutions are equally aesthetically pleasing and ultimately the aesthetics of the final installation could be the deciding factor in the mounting solution chosen.

Oh, the rigs I've rigged..

I used to travel with this raggedy carry on suitcase for the site survey gear, until I invested in a proper suitcase that can hold the survey kit on one side and a week's worth of my clothes on the other side..

This is my suitcase when it is fully loaded with 2 Tessco battery packs, all necessary mounting equipment and a Cisco 1142 access point.
















Over the years I've had to come up with all kinds of site survey mounting solutions for the Cisco 1240, 1130 and 1140 access points.  Luckily the 1130 and 1140 have similar mounting fixtures, and what has worked for the 1130 easily works for the 1140.

For my first survey with a 1240, the customer wanted to ceiling mount the ap and use the AIR-ANT4941 dipole antennas, so I rigged up a wire harness to the back of the 1240 using phone wire.  I used the suspended ceiling clips that come with the 1240 to rig up a hook to hang the ap from the suspended ceiling grid while I was surveying.  Luckily the customer had some heavy duty wire, pliers and duct tape that I could use/borrow.  Flying to a customer site leaves you pretty unprepared to rig something up since you can't carry any tools with you.





















This is a rig I made for the 1240 ap out of a couple of coat hangers and some clear tape.





















This rig allows me to hang the 1240 off of a Wooster Wide Boy attachment (found at Lowe's) at the top of a Mr. Longarm (found at Home Depot) painters pole.  From there the external antennas can be duct taped to the arms of the Wooster.

I don't have a picture of the survey cart all setup with a 1240 survey rig attached, but it looks something like this when it is all assembled.





















Coming up with a mounting solution for the 1130/1140 was a bit trickier since the ap is installed horizontally.  I got the idea from a friend who works for Cisco Advanced Services.  He uses a PVC floor scrubber attachment with the bristles removed, and the edges ground down to allow the attachment of the 1140 mounting bracket.

















I don't have a dremel to grind the PVC, so I opted for a wooden drywall tool attachment with the bristles removed for my survey rig.  The two angled adapters are used to put the 1130/1140 at the right angle for surveying.

















Using items found at any Home Depot make traveling to the survey location much easier.  The only tools I need to get before arriving at the customer location is the Mr. Longarm and a  fairly sturdy dowel rod.  I use the dowel rod to apply the ap number sticker to the suspended ceiling grid (with the help of a little tape).  I don't need a ladder if I have the dowel rod.

As long as I can use some sort of rolling cart at the customer site, the painter's pole survey rig will work.  Most recently I used a furniture trolley as a survey cart.  Once when a cart wasn't available, I've even had to use a waiting room chair as a support for the painter's pole.


Of course, the most insane thing I've done is climb a 20 foot ladder that was being stabilized by an enormous PVC elbow attached to the top of the ladder.  Never again.

Obviously I'm not nearly as organized as Keith, but there is a method to the madness, I swear!
I've had this backpack for five years, and considering all the wear and tear it has been through, it has held up pretty well. I've had it so long, I can't find a photo of it online..   It's an older model of a Wenger Swiss Army backpack.
